About the artist
Robert creates intricate black ink drawings where light and shadow open portals to impossible worlds. Knights ride ostriches into battle, demons wear daisy chains, and mermaids resemble angler fish. Working primarily in stark black ink on white paper, he uses the dramatic interplay of light and dark to guide the viewer's eye through moments of wonder, humor, and the unexpected. His approach to contrast is deliberate: shadows conceal and reveal simultaneously, creating depth in impossible architectures and highlighting the absurd details that make each world feel alive. The pure white of untouched paper becomes as important as the ink itself. Negative space transforms into luminous atmospheres, while dense cross-hatching plunges viewers into mysterious depths. Drawing from the visual language of Dungeons & Dragons manuals, comic books, and fantasy illustration, Robert has developed a style that honors these influences while becoming distinctly his own. His creative process follows intuitive questions: what if the terrifying became tender, or the mundane became mythic? Black ink remains his primary medium for its precision and stark drama, though he's increasingly exploring how ink interacts with cut paper and watercolor to create new dimensions of light and shadow. Robert sells prints at local markets and recently had his first gallery exhibition.
