About the artist
I am a high school senior and emerging artist based in Mumbai, India, balancing a parallel practice in visual art and artificial intelligence, where analytical thinking and emotional observation inform one another. This work is inspired by my interest in how perception is formed through moments of clarity and interruption. I am drawn to the idea that identity is not experienced as a seamless whole, but assembled through alternating states of focus and obscurity. Light and shadow become metaphors for this process, where understanding emerges gradually rather than all at once. The portrait begins in controlled realism, shaped by light that defines structure and presence. As the face moves into shadow, it fragments into modular, grid-like units. These interruptions are not meant to suggest loss or distortion, but reorganization. Shadow functions as a space of processing, where information is broken down and reassembled, while light represents moments of recognition and coherence. The steady gaze remains intact, anchoring the composition and asserting agency amid fragmentation. I executed this work using pencil and charcoal to precisely control tonal contrast. Light is built through layered shading and erasure, while shadow accumulates through dense cross-hatching and rigid geometry. The transition from organic rendering to structured abstraction mirrors the movement between intuition and system. Through this balance, I use light and shadow to frame perception as layered, parallel, and continuously constructed rather than fixed.
