About the artist
Huiyuan Zhang is an independent ceramic artist based in China. Her works have been exhibited in various contemporary art and craft exhibitions both domestically and internationally. Zhang is a member of several ceramic and contemporary art associations, including the Chinese Ceramic Art Association and the Asian Contemporary Craft Network. She has received recognition for her poetic exploration of material and spirituality, with works collected by private collectors and art institutions. Through her practice, Zhang continues to bridge traditional firing techniques with contemporary aesthetics, expressing a quiet yet profound dialogue between nature and the self.

Huiyuan Zhang is a contemporary ceramic artist whose practice is deeply rooted in Eastern Zen philosophy and a close dialogue with nature. I am Huiyuan Zhang , an artist creating contemporary ceramic works that embody Eastern Zen philosophy, using natural ash glazes and wood-firing as my core techniques.

- What is special about your technique? Why this medium?
My practice centers on natural ash glazes (pine, rice straw, bamboo) and a dual-firing approach. In wood-firing, I allow flame, ash, and airflow to collaborate, imprinting each piece with unique, "impermanent" traces. This dialogue between natural force and human intention defines my work. Clay and fire are the most fundamental elements, connecting art directly to nature. Ceramics truthfully mirror the maker's state of mind.
